How to Understand Your Customers

How to Understand Your Customers

Why This is Important
  • To build a strong personal brand, you must understand your customers.
  • Customers have feelings; they can be happy or upset with you.
Treat them with care and respect.

Old Way of Finding Customers

Earlier, businesses used “demographic study” to find customers. They focused on:

  • Age – How old they are.
  • Gender – Male or female.
  • Marital Status – Single or married.
  • Income – How much they earn.
  • Location – Where they live (city or village).

New Way of Finding Customers

Now, just knowing basic details is not enough. You must also understand:

  • Lifestyle – How they live their daily life.
  • Expectations – What they want from a product or service.
  • Dreams & Goals – Their future plans.
  • Problems – What challenges they face.

Example:

  • Two students in the same college, same age, same city, and same income might think very differently.
  • You need to know how they think before deciding whom to target.

What You Should Know About Your Customers

To understand your audience better, focus on these:

i. What Matters to Them
What things are important in their life?

ii. Where They Spend Time
Are they on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, or YouTube?

iii. What Device They Use
Do they prefer mobile phones, laptops, or tablets?

iv. What They Read
Do they read newspapers or magazines? Which ones?

v. Their Problems

  • What difficulties do they face?
  • How can you help them?

vi. Their Feelings
Are they happy, stressed, or ambitious?

Why This Matters

  • If you understand your customers well, you can talk to them in the right way.
  • You will know where to advertise and how to solve their problems.
  • If you focus on what they need, they will trust and engage with you.
